Australia is the destination we know from both ends. The group started in Sydney, and its head office is still there — so the people who place you in India and the people who receive you in Australia work for the same company.

That matters in a specific, practical way. If something goes wrong in your first month — your accommodation falls through, your enrolment has a problem, you cannot work out which government office you need — there is a 4nations office in the same city as you, not just an agent back in India who has already been paid.

Most students go for February or July. The application should start six to nine months before that, because the offer has to arrive before the visa file can be prepared, and the visa itself takes its own time.

The UK suits students who want to finish sooner. Most taught masters run a single year rather than two, which changes the whole calculation: one year of tuition, one year of living costs, and you are working a year earlier.

The trade is intensity. A one-year masters is the same content in less time, and the application asks more of your statement of purpose than an Australian one usually does — UK admissions read it closely, so it is worth writing properly rather than quickly.

September is the main intake. January exists at many universities but with fewer courses open, so if a specific course matters to you, plan for September.

New Zealand takes fewer international students than Australia, and that cuts both ways. Class sizes are smaller and you are less likely to be one of hundreds in a lecture hall. There are also simply fewer places, and fewer universities to choose between.

It suits students who already know what they want to study and do not need a large university’s breadth of options. If you are still deciding, Australia gives you more room to change direction.

Intakes follow the southern hemisphere calendar, so February and July.

Canada draws more Indian students than almost anywhere else, and that is a genuine advantage when you arrive: there is an established community in most university cities, so the first few months are less isolating than they can be elsewhere.

The application asks for proof of funds in a specific form, and the timing of that matters more than students expect — the money needs to be in place and documented before the study permit application, not while it is being assessed.

The US has the widest choice of any destination here — more universities, more programmes, and more variation in what each one wants from an application. That breadth is the reason to go, and the reason it takes longer to prepare.

Two things make the timeline different. Some programmes still ask for standardised tests beyond IELTS, and the student visa involves an in-person interview at a consulate rather than a paper decision. Neither is difficult, but both need booking well ahead.

If the US is your plan, start a full year before your intended intake rather than six months.

Germany is the cheapest of these six for tuition — public universities charge little or nothing, even to international students. What you save on fees you spend on preparation.

Two requirements have no equivalent in the Commonwealth destinations. Many programmes teach in German and expect proficiency, so an English-only application narrows your options considerably. And the student visa requires a blocked bank account holding a set sum for your first year, which has to be arranged before you travel rather than after.
